Matcha Tea

Every year it seems there is a new craze in the food and drink industry. This year all the hype is about Matcha Tea. Matcha tea is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. While we all caught onto the green tea hype years ago because of its heightened amount of antioxidants (a substance that removes potentially damaging oxidizing agents in a living organism), it is said that one cup of Matcha Tea is comparable to three cups of green tea. But buyer beware, with every delicious latte and smoothie you buy, there are additional ingredients that one might not think of. A lot of coffee houses use concoctions where the first and main ingredient in these delicious drinks is SUGAR! Good old sugar, so good for your body and teeth. For example, a tall Matcha Latte from Starbucks contains 24g of sugar! SO before you go and satisfy your “healthy” and delicious Matcha craving, it might not be a bad idea to ask your barista to take a look at the ingredients and sugar content first. Binge Drinking

Binge drinking is on the rise. More than 15% of Canadians are regularly bingeing and this is causing problems to relationships and their overall health. Here are some warning signs that you (or someone you might know) is a binge drinker:

1) You can’t drink moderately: If you find you are drinking more than you intended to, you may want to consider whether you are in control of your habits

2)You can’t remember things: What was a fun night out may turn into a distant memory. A night of heavy drinking causes the brain messenger know as the glutamate to be disrupted. This is why heavy drinking suppressed our memories.

3) You can’t cut back: Your commitments to quitting or cutting back cannot be fulfilled.

4) Your friends/family have expressed their concerns: If the people who care about you the most have made comments, it may be a good idea to consult with your family doctor to look into the next steps.

5) Your drinking is affecting your job, relationships or finances.

6) You’re causing harm to the people around you: If you find your drinking is starting to affect your relationships, it’s time to take control of your drinking problem.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Dry mouth is a condition where our mouths produces less saliva than normal. It is very common in seniors and it affects approximately 1 in 5 Canadians. When we have low salivary flow, it can increase our chances of cavities and gum disease.

Patients suffer from dry mouth for a number of reasons. These include: medications, radiation, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, ages. Menopause, anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation and high blood pressure.

Some ways to relieve dry mouth are: chewing sugar free gum, limit your caffeine intake, alcohol-free mouthwashes, stop smoking, drink water regularly, products designed for dry mouth, room humidifiers, try breathing through nose.

E-Cigarette Flavours

A new research study has found that smoking sweet e-cigarettes can increase your chances of cavities!

Scientist evaluated the e-cigarette aerosols and found that the properties are similar to those found in high sucrose gummy candies and acidic drinks and can have adverse effects on the hard tissues in the oral cavity.

The Benefits of Drinking Enough Water

While it is often recommended that you should drink 8 glasses (250ml per glass) a day, the actual amount of required water is recommended on an individual basis. Several factors that affect these recommendations are weight, the climate where you live and how often you exercise. A telltale sign that you are lacking in the “hydration department” is the colour of your urine. The clearest sign showing you that properly hydrated is a transparent yellow or a pale colour. If you find that your urine is a darker yellow, you should up your water intake 😊

The many benefits of staying hydrated

1) More energy: Water helps keep up a steady flow of nutrients into your cells.

2) Feeling strong when you work out: Water helps your muscles maintain the right balance of electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium to function properly. Without water, you are more prone to cramping.

3) Less overeating: A study from the University of Illinois involving more than 18,000 adults found that when people increased their daily water intake by 250 to 750ml (on top of the liter they drank on average), they consumed as many as 205 fewer calories a day.

4) Memory improvement: While there is no definitive research stating that hydration helps adults and their memory, studies have found that memory and attention improve in children after they have some water.

5) Combating cold symptoms: There’s a reason your doctor tells you to drink more when you are getting sick. As your body launches its attack against germs, your cells need to be properly hydrated to maintain that effort. Drinking water also helps loosen mucus, which keeps your nose and throat moist.

6) You’ll keep things regular: You can reduce the risk of constipation by staying hydrated.

If you find it difficult to remember to drink water, I recommend buying a reusable bottle (I love my S’well, pricey but worth every penny). You can fill them up on the go! Or if water isn’t your drink of choice, try sparkling or fruit-flavoured water. That added touch may be just what you need 😊

Back To School Lunch Ideas


We’re heading into our third week of school! Can you believe it? As things start to settle down and routines start to kick in, parents are still often left scrambling for healthy and kid acceptable lunch ideas. Here are some yummy ones that your child will love!

Monday: Turkey and Cheddar Roll Up, Fresh Berries, and Yoghurt

Tuesday: Hummus, Pita Bread, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Sliced Oranges

Wednesday: Cheese Quesadilla, Guacamole, Salsa, Tortilla Chips and Slice Strawberries

Thursday: Pasta Salad, Cheese String, Made Good Granola Bars (these are nut free, have veggies hidden in them and they are always a hit), Raspberries

Friday:  Bagel and Cream Cheese, Yoghurt, Baby Carrots and Fruit Snacks

Christina’s Baby Shower

Last night we celebrated our beautiful mommy to be Christina at Villaggio Ristorante in Kleinburg. It was a night full of laughter, good food and fun. We are so looking forward to welcoming Christina’s little girl into our hearts and dental family. Thank you to Madeline’s daughter Jessica for the gorgeous cake!

Did You Know?-Cold Sores

Cold sores are blisters on the lips and are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1. Did you know that 90% of all people get a cold sore once in their life? Following the initial blister, your body may develop antibodies, after that 40% of the population are likely to have recurring blisters. The blisters are generally brought on after a fever, colds or in times of stress when our immune system is down. Cold sores are spread by kissing, sharing of utensils, glasses, lip balms, etc. Once the virus has entered your body, it can take up to 20 days after exposure for the cold sore to appear. The sores then normally last 7-10 days and are considered contagious until they crust over. Because of this, we recommend rescheduling any dental appointments until you are no longer considered contagious.
